Course Philosophy and Format
The field of immunology is an exciting blend of applied and basic science. Nowhere else in the study of biology do experimental breakthroughs have such an immediate effect upon our understanding of human disease and its treatment. At the same time, however, the study of the immune system has revealed a host of biological principles that are fundamental to our understanding of molecular, cellular and developmental biology. For these reasons, I see a course in immunology as an opportunity to learn about the functioning of the immune system and as vehicle to explore modern experimental biology. Wherever possible, I will introduce the concepts of immunology in an experimental framework. Many of these experimental procedures are common throughout the study of biology, and I think this course will draw on many of the concepts you have covered in your other biology courses. Our objective then will be to master the essential components and mechanisms of the immune system while improving our understanding of all experimental biology.
